Harrow School: Druries Boarding House

Residential boarding school partial redevelopment

The Druries, founded in the early 19th century, is one of the oldest and most impressive Houses at Harrow School.

Harrow School has its history rooted deep in British heritage. Founded in the year 1572 under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I, the school continues to educate pupils from all across the country to this day. It is located in a leafy 300-acre estate, encompassing much of Harrow on the Hill in North-West London. As stewards of many cherished traditions, todays Harrovians follow the in the footsteps of The Giants of Old, united by strength of character, lasting friendships and the desire to be of good influence. The Druries is just one of seveal boarding houses for the school, and is situated on the High Street. It was built in the 1790's and currently serves as one of the smallest boarding houses of the school.

The design team at Walker Mower were privileged to have been a part of this expansive redevelopment project of one of the United Kingdom's oldest education facilities. Working closely with our client, extra care and attention was paid to the design of this particular project in light of its ancient heritage. Routing services through existing areas without causing any undue stress to the structure, all whilst ensuring that the residents of the boarding school could remain in place without being disturbed.

Work commenced on the redevelopment of The Druries in the Summer of 2019, having been finished in the Autumn of 2020. In total a new common room and light, spacious communal areas were added, as well as 11 new bedrooms and several bathroom and toilet facilities. Additional renovation was undertaken to the existing Assistant Head Master's flat.
